- Abstract
The positive effect of the innovations on the economic progress of countries is remarkable. However, the impact of these innovations on the environment is still a matter of study and discussion. This paper aimed to analyze - from the perspective of the Triple Bottom Line, which is composed of economic, environmental and social pillars - the evolution of the number of patent applications in Brazil relating to sustainable innovations. The research used information from the National Institute of Industrial Property - INPI, between 2000 and the latest data available updated in 2012. Was analyzed 249 patent applications and the results showed that, despite the significant growth in the total number of patent applications in the period, the number of those applications related to sustainability was low and, furthermore, that such requests do not have technological bias innovation. The results suggest that fi rms may not be supplying the demands of society for more sustainable and less environmental damaging products.
