- Abstract
Introduction: Some studies showed an association between air pollution and Emergency Department visits for migraine. However, these results require verification by larger-scale studies, since the clinicians have not greatly accepted the association between air pollution with migraine. As a result, the present systematic review aims to determine whether outdoor air pollution can cause an increase in triggering of migraine headache and if yes, which pollutants contribute more. Method: A literature search was performed in Scopus, Medline (via PubMed), EMBASE, and Web of Science to carry out this systematic review. Manual searches for resources and related references were also conducted to complete the search. After completion of the search, all observational studies which investigated the association between ambient air pollution and migraine headache and had inclusion criteria were included in the review Results: Nine articles from a total of 990 identified articles met the inclusion criteria and entered the study. In the gaseous air pollutants category, exposure to NO2, O3, and CO had a role in triggering of migraine; but, there found no clear role for SO2. In the particulate air pollutants category, PM10 had a relationship with migraine trigger; however, no clear relationship found for PM2.5 and migraine. Conclusion: It is recommended to conduct more studies in different cities around the world with more precise methodology, on all types of pollutants, especially SO2 and PM2.5.
