- Abstract
Potamophylax cingulatus (Trichoptera) in a small stream in south Sweden had a one year life cycle with five larval instars. The seasonal changes of population density were very different at four localities in the stream. Also, the numbers ot drifting and upstream-moving larvae differed between the localities. The drifting fraction consisted of, on the average, smaller larvae than the benthic population at the same time. Upstream-moving larvae were to more than 99 % in the final instar. Seasonal increases of locomotory activity led to considerable movements in upstream and downstream directions and were probably related to 1) increased food requirements and 2) the search for suitable pupation places. In addition, a certain amount of accidental drift took place.
