- Abstract
An account is given of small mammal trapping carried out in five regions of West Norway, and an area in North Norway. The methods of trapping with live traps are described, and the sources of bias iii the results are enumerated and discussed. A hypothesis is put forward to account lot the reluctance to enter a trap shown by Microtus agrestis, and suggestions made whereby this and other sources of bias may be obviated or lessened. The interpretation and validity of trapping results is discussed, and the findings applied to the data obtained in the field. It is shown that the small mammal fauna of an area where there is a rapid transition from a well-wooded, sheltered situation to open moorland, as in a mountain valley, may show similar trends to those demonstrated by trappings from various stations between the coast, the high mountains, and the north. Evidence is also brought forward to show that contagious distribution in. mammals may be of considerable importance in determining the effectiveness of a trapping technique. It appears, from a consideration of the results, that a high density of traps on the ground is, within certain limits, effective in ensuring that a sample of the small mammal population is taken which will provide a rapid and accurate estimate of the fauna.
