- Abstract
This document is a summary of a special issue of the journal Cells titled "Intervertebral Disc Degeneration and Regeneration: New Molecular Mechanisms and Therapeutics." The intervertebral disc (IVD) is a soft tissue in the spinal column that consists of the central nucleus pulposus and the annulus fibrosus. The regeneration capacity of IVDs is limited due to a lack of viable cells and poor nutritional supply. The special issue includes six articles and reviews that explore various molecular mechanisms and potential treatment strategies for IVD degeneration and regeneration. Topics covered include the protective effects of hyperbaric oxygen, the role of the renin-angiotensin system, stem cell therapy, inducing angiogenesis, promoting differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells, and targeting ferroptosis. These articles provide valuable insights into the current understanding of IVD degeneration and regeneration for the development of new treatment approaches.
