- Abstract
A major difficulty faced by teachers of biology is to organize the content to be taught in order to guarantee the efficiency of the teaching-learning process. In this sense, Drosophila have been allies of the teachers during classroom and not only in zoology, but also genetics and ecology, and are used extensively in research models, which allows teachers to classes with a complement of scientific debates of updates using a model known by the students. These organisms are reference models in teaching and research laboratory due to easy maintenance, low cost, by survive at room temperature, are readily observable with magnifying glass and having relatively smaller genome than other eukaryotes. Given the importance of these insects, the present work consists of a brief history on the use of Drosophila in either research or education, describing how these organisms can be used in teaching in practical and theoretical classes, as bioindicators in nature, and research in genotoxicity tests and human diseases such as Parkinson's disease, for example. Becoming an informative and formative work for undergraduate biological sciences and professionals working in basic and higher education, public and private institutions that have or not to develop good laboratory practices
