- Abstract
Hans Trommer's and Valérien Schmidely's film version of Romeo and Juliet in the Village (1941) was celebrated by the contemporary press as especially faithful to Keller's novella and as particularly "Swiss". Keller's pre-text, however, lends itself very poorly to attempts at national appropriation. The fundamental 'Swissness' that attracted critics to the film can be attributed to a number of modifications in terms of race, class and gender that Trommer made in his script. That they were necessary underlines the critical energy inherent in Keller's novella.
