De te fabula narratur: Narrativity, Ethics and Psychoanalysis in the Critical Thought of Umberto Eco.
- Authors
SMITH, JONATHAN
- Abstract
The article analyzes the relations between narrativity, ethics and psychoanalysis that mark critical writings of Italian author Umberto Eco. It examines an essay titled "L'uso pratico dei personaggi," which starts by cross-referencing Francesco De Sanctis and Benedetto Croce, the most significant critics in the country in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th, respectively. The expected limitations of his work in the methodology of literary interpretation are also tackled.
