- Abstract
A critique is presented which discusses the influence of Russian Orthodox imagery and religious rapture on 20th century Russian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, focusing on poems such as "Zauber" (Magic), the poetry book "Stundenbuch" (Book of Hours), and "Vom Tode Mariae" (On the Death of Mary). Rilke's childhood in Russia, his portrayal of the relationship between God and man, and life and death in poetry are discussed.
