- Abstract
The growing interest in the teleworking phenomenon has inspired research in disciplines ranging from transportation and urban planning, ethics, law, sociology, and organizational studies. Despite the great advances on the theme, it is observed in the Management literature that most of the discussions are centered on prescriptive and positive views on organizational behavior, resulting in motivational theories, cost reduction, and management strategies. Therefore, a critical approach in problematizing dark sides and possible ambiguous effects of teleworking on the workers' lifestyle persist as a research gap. We use critical literature to study the phenomenon of teleworking. We are questioning how critical theory may help studies on telework to reflect on possible ambiguities and veiled facets of the teleworking on workers' free time. Our argument points to the instrumentalization of free time, highlighting how it has become a productive time for capital. We believe that the practical and social contributions of the research are to raise questions about workers' free time. We aim to contribute by offering to society, students, legislators, and public policymakers, our criticisms about how laws in society have been insufficient in support workers within the framework of contemporary labor relations.
