- Abstract
One of the richest influences on English writing at the very outset of the new millennium is the SMS language. The practices teenagers draw on in the construction and display of messages by the use of a new variety of abbreviations through hybridization of numbers and phonemes are deeply influencing the spellings of the university students. To investigate the effect, 60 e-mails, 90 lecture notes of the MA fourth semester students, and 50 scraps from Orkut and Face book were selected for the study. The samples were selected using purposive sampling technique. Content analysis was used as the procedure for data analysis. The analyses revealed that the academic English writing of the university students has the traces of scripted heterogeneity (variation) and a dynamic, ongoing process of linguistic change is under way in contemporary Pakistani English writing. At the same time, SMS as a register is extending its horizons and is moving from one register to others by the extension of its registral features.
