- Abstract
The paper reports an exploratory qualitative research that focuses on visitors' experiences at a museum. This paper attempts to describe the satisfying experiences of visitors of the museum and to explore the key experiential dimensions of museum experiences. A replicated PAT survey form (Johns and Lee-Ross, 1997), that is, a four-paged, open-ended questionnaire was given to visitors at the exit point and also at the café of Sabah Museum after their visit. The sample size consisted of 53 visitors who had visited Sabah Museum in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia between January and February 2007. Findings reveal that visitors regarded their museum visit as a combination of cognitive, educative, affective and reflective process. The key satisfying experiences are largely derived from the objects/ displays at the museum, the physical environment and also the personal experiential gained. Visitors' satisfying experiences can be categorized as objective, cognitive, introspective and social. While the key experiential dimensions contributing to museum experiences are more of personal attributes, relating to excitement, playfulness, learning and contemplation. The findings may have significant managerial and practical implications to the management of Sabah Museum in terms of attracting more visitors and enhancing the visitors' experiences. The data collected exhibits strong ecological validity as the responses were grounded from the respondents.
