- Abstract
Research has suggested that young children's temperament and parents' behaviors are related; however, few studies have examined variables that may help professionals who work with young children better understand this association. Therefore, this exploratory study examined parents' perceptions of their young children as a potential mediating variable in the association between characteristics of young children's temperament and the parent-young child relationship. Forty-nine parents of young children who ranged in age from 2- to 6-years and who were attending private preschool/daycare programs in a Southeastern state completed measures regarding the variables of interest. Correlational analyses indicated that these variables were related significantly. Further, regression analyses suggested that parents' positive perceptions predicted parents' involvement and communication. Regression analyses also suggested that parents' negative perceptions of their young children mediated the association between parent-young child relationship characteristics and young children's effortful control. These findings emphasized the importance of considering parents' perceptions of their young children in investigating the parent-young child relationship and young children's temperament.
