Placing the Book of Kells.
- Authors
TILGHMAN, BENJAMIN C.
- Abstract
The Book of Kells is tied intimately to concepts of place. In its imagery, the charter materials added to it, and even its very name, the Book of Kells as an object demonstrates a clear concern for its situation within its regional political and spiritual geography. Building on Karen Overbey’s work exploring the relationships among place, relics, and secular and ecclesiastical power structures, this essay examines how the iconography and style of the Book of Kells was shaped to reinforce identifications of sanctity and authority in the context of the highly contested sacral geographies around the Irish Sea during the ninth century.
