- Title
Maternal Deaths due to Adverse Drug Reactions to Nevirapinecontaining HAART: New recommendations for ARV therapy in Pregnancy in South Africa.
- Authors
Moran, N. F.
- Abstract
The article discusses the problem that has been contributing to morbidity and mortality in South Africa. The causes of morbidity and mortality include adverse drug reactions to anti-retroviral drugs, particularly nevirapine. However, the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in pregnancy as a key component of the national strategy to reduce maternal deaths and to combat the HIV epidemic in general must not be understood as objections to its usage. Meanwhile, HIV-infection is also the most important condition contributing to maternal deaths in the country.
