- Abstract
This study describes the knowledge of adverse effects of abortion and the attitudes of rural Tshivenda speaking teenagers towards choice of termination of pregnancy in Vhembe District, South Africa. A quantitative cross-sectional descriptive survey design was used to collect data in 10 secondary schools with a sample size of n=205 learners who were randomly selected based on population proportional to size procedure which ensured proportional representativeness of grade in the final sample. The response rate was 86% (n=176). A self-administered questionnaire comprising of structured and semi-structured items was used. Ethical clearance was obtained from the University of Venda before data collection. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 21.0 software. The analysis of knowledge data was based on the scores the respondents got on the question "mention all the adverse effects of abortion you know". The majority of respondents (73% n=178) had a 0.04 level of abortion adverse effects knowledge; yet the majority (84% n=149) believed that doing abortion is dangerous. Rural Tshivenda speaking teenagers of Vhembe district know very little about the adverse effects of abortion and yet have negative attitudes towards it. Awareness campaigns regarding Choice on termination of Pregnancy should emphasize its physiological, psychological and subsequent pregnancy effects so that abortion becomes indeed an informed decision.
