- Abstract
In I Christianity, Race, and Sport i , Jeffrey Scholes argues persuasively that in the United States, Christian-infused white supremacy plays a major role in determining how our society imagines and treats professional Black athletes. Gary Scott Smith's new biography, I Strength for the Fight: The Life and Faith of Jackie Robinson i (Eerdmans, 2022), provides strong evidence in support of Scholes's argument that racial equality was central to Robinson's religious vision. Scholes shows conclusively that despite the popular stories of Robinson, the good Methodist who "turned the other cheek" to survive the stresses of those first years, Robinson was driven, first and foremost, by his commitment to the advancement of his race.
