- Abstract
Objective. To compare the rate of radiographic progression in rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with classical or biological disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) Methods. 51 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with classical DMARDs and 97 treated with biological DMARDs were included. Radiological progression after 12 months of treatment was evaluated using the van der Heijde -- modified Sharp score. Results. The radiological progression was statistically more important in patients treated with classical DMARDs (p < 0,0001). When the hand and feet radiographies were evaluated separately, this finding was true only at the hands. Both delta scores (erosion and space narrowing) were lower in the biological group, achieving statistical signification in erosion score. Conclusions. Both classical and biological therapy regimes reduce radiological progression, being statistically more important in patients who have had in therapeutic arsenal biological agents, these offering a superior bone protection.
