- Abstract
This article discusses Algirdas Julius Greimas's conception of national communism, a conception formulated in a text written in the 1950s but published only in 1991. This was the first text written in Lithuanian that analyzed the phenomenon of national communism. In Greimas's view "international communism" inevitably becomes "national". And it was the post-Stalinist liberalization that created conditions for the appearance of national communism in the Soviet Union. Thus "Lithuanian communism" too was inevitable. The second part of this paper analyzes the way Lithuanian communist localism expressed itself politically, culturally, and socioeconomically. The cases discussed illustrate well the possibilities and limitations of Lithuanian communism.
