- Abstract
By the poem's end, the Bedouin have been replaced by a resonant myth or dream of otherness. Ahmed's strident blendsharpens my vision,Driving me irresistiblytoward an arcane zoneUntil I am only there, coincident with desire,In silent concertbefore the horizon,Letting me knowI no longer need to knowAnything but the fine, curvilinear shapeof the dunes.I would be Bedouin again, myself my sole companion,With steaming coffee in micro-cloudsbarely visiblein this solid geometry of heatThat braids itselfinto the coffee's intense pull. The poet as ethnographer had a notion of the Bedouin at hand and the cityscape beyond ethnographic reach.
