- Abstract
Distant thromboembolic events, such as deep venous thrombosis, myocardial infarction and stroke caused by blood clots, comprise some of the most frequent complications that occur following major operative procedures, traumatic injury and malignancy. In this article, author describes a novel method of inhibiting the formation of these undesirable thrombin -- an approach that may provide prophylaxis against thrombosis without an associated increase in the risk of bleeding. It has long been known that humans are prone to the development of vascular thrombotic occlusion after injury. This observation is not surprising; the upregulation of hemostatic mechanisms after trauma confers a survival advantage. Throughout the animal kingdom, premature death is often the result of hemorrhagic injury and an inability to rapidly and efficiently staunch blood loss.
