- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of arrieros, also known as multeers, in the Spanish and Mexican method of pack transportation adopted by miners in the western U.S. during the 19th century. The article examines the significance of pack transportation to commerce and trade, the development of pack train routes in South America, and the economic importance of pack animals such as horses, donkeys, and mules. The article also discusses pack equipment, Mexican packers who worked for the U.S. Army, and the skills of muleteers.
