- Abstract
The article explores the role of non-aligned countries in affecting change in international organizations such as the United Nations (UN). The author reflects on the origins of the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) and the popularization of non-alignment in postcolonial states such as India in their desire for peace during the Cold War. Emphasis is given to the increasing of universalization of the UN through the membership of more countries from Africa and the Pacific region. Other topics include the right to self-determination of developing countries, the role of NAM countries in international peacekeeping, and the democratization of international monetary and financial institutions.
