- Abstract
The article presents a professional biography of Swiss ethnologist Gerhard Baer. It traces his interest in Egyptology, ethnology and later Eastern Studies. He finished his studies in Basel, Switzerland under the mentorship of Alfred Bühler in the end of 1960 and in 1966 made a research journey to South America. The article discusses the evolution of ethnology in the German speaking lands and their mutual influences; the theoretical underpinnings of the entirety of ethnology; and Musuems of ethnology in Basel and Geneva, Switzerland.
