- Title
El pintor en la arena: los ludi romanos en la pintura de historia decimonónica.
- Authors
ARBÓS, JOAN MUT I.
- Abstract
In the second half of the 19th-century, history painting manifested a greater interest in themes from the classic world, evident in both depictions of the great deeds and episodes of the past and in the representation of subjects set in everyday Antiquity which became fashionable through their niterpretation as a parallel to 19th-century bourgeois society. One significant type of the latter category, namely depictions of Roman public leisure, provides the subject of this text.
