- Title
"Crear artífizes yluminados en el buen camino de el Arte": los últimos discípulos españoles de Mengs.
- Abstract
On January 27th, 1777, Anton Raphael Mengs left Madrid accompanied by five young painters who would study under his direction in Rome. Francisco Agustín, Buenaventura Salesa and Carlos Espinosa, pupils of Bayeu, Manuel Napoli, Maella's disciple, and Francisco Javier Ramos, Mengs' own disciple, formed this privileged group that Goya wanted to join. During two years and a half they were working with the master, and the time they remained in Rome under the protection of José Nicolas de Azara, these painters completed their education under the artistic principles of 'the painter philosopher'. However, when they returned their works and their training had hardly any impact in the development of Spanish painting.
