- Abstract
Video games have become an extended leisure option. In this paper we will reflect on target languages in video games and, specifically, on the presence of the Basque language as a minority language in this form of entertainment, as well as on its development in the last years and the challenges it faces. The study is complemented with a reception survey of video game players whose native language is Basque, Catalan, or Spanish. A large part of these players state that they would prefer to play in their native language, and they feel upset if they need to play in a different language. The results of this exploratory study indicate that localisations into minority languages would be welcomed by players and invite to develop more comprehensive studies that address this sociolinguistic aspect of video game localisation.
