- Abstract
The article analyzes the dual motifs of captivity and escape in the book "The Member of the Wedding," by Carson McCullers and discusses the way in which they are linked to search for belonging and the development of gender identity in the character Frankie Addams. It is noted that literary critics Harilaos Stecopoulos and Noah Mass have discussed Addams's experience of female adolescence and the novel's themes of gender and sexuality themes of gender and sexuality. The author states that viewing Frankie as a traveler in the book could provide a new reading to the classic American narratives of female adolescence.
