Cabinets of Wonders.
- Authors
švankmajer, Jan
- Abstract
The author, a surrealist filmmaker and collector, reflects on the concept of a cabinet of wonders. He prefers these collections to those in museums because they are organized by emotion and analogy rather than by rationality or for the purpose of education. Details on a cabinet of wonders collected by Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II are presented. The author also describes his own cabinet of wonders which he is collecting in a former granary. The collection includes artifacts from natural history, drawings, African masks and fetishes, and paintings. Photographs of the collection are also presented.
