- Abstract
This article explores the historical oversight of cricket in English society, specifically focusing on discrimination, elitism, and exclusion within the sport. Investigations have revealed a long history of social elitism, racial and gender prejudice, and resistance to change within the cricket community. The article argues for the recognition of sport as a valuable subject in historical research and emphasizes the need for a more inclusive approach to ensure the future appeal of cricket. It also discusses the development of two distinct cricket cultures in England based on social class, which has led to a decline in the standards of play in certain regions.
