- Abstract
This article provides information on a nationwide survey of U.S. television news health reporters in an aim to explore the reporting practices of local television news health and to find out how these reporters work with their health sources. If one is a public relations practitioner at a health or medical-oriented organization, the person is probably bombarded with calls from the news media seeking information on health scares or medical miracle. According to Gary Schwitzer, dissemination of health news was a booming industry in the 1990s and the trend seems to be continuing as the new millennium progresses, as of spring 2004. In fact, a 2002 survey by the Project for Excellence in Journalism found that health and medicine are the most popular beat in local television newsrooms. Apparently, health news is flourishing in broadcast because there is a need to feed the appetite of media consumers. A September 2002 Gallup poll allegedly found that a majority of U.S. citizens receive more of their health and medical information from television than from any other media source. In addition, almost half of them say they sometimes ask their doctors specific questions as a direct result of something they have heard or read in the media or on the Internet.
