- Abstract
The article looks at the well known story of a painter depicted by author Samuel Taylor Coleridge in the 1800 book "Lyrical Ballads." Topics discussed include the role of the story in the 1762 book "The Citizen of the World; or, Letters From a Chinese Philosopher" by Oliver Goldsmith as the source of the fable, effect of the emphasis of Coleridge on the differences in the fable on efforts to identify his source, and portrayal of black spots in the fable recounted by Coleridge.
