- Title
Why does Shakespeare give his Windsor Schoolmaster a Double Occupation as an Educator and as a Parson?
- Authors
Sokol, B J
- Abstract
A literary analysis of the play "The Merry Wives of Windsor" by William Shakespeare is presented. It examines why the character Hugh Evans is given two occupations as an educator and a parson despite only acting as a teacher in the play. The author looks at the professional association between clergymen and schoolteachers during Shakespeare's time and rarity of such dual occupations, suggesting it is meant to differentiate Evans as a character.
