The Parish Church of Sir Thomas Browne’s Childhood.
- Authors
Barbour, Reid
- Abstract
The author discusses biographical details about 17th century English author Sir Thomas Browne found in the account books of his childhood parish church St. Michael le Querne in London, England. The influence of Protestant rectors John Bowle and George Downame on Browne's book "Religio Medici" is discussed, as well as a reference in the account to a ransom paid for the return of a Thomas Browne captured at sea. The author speculates that Browne was captured by pirate John Nutt in 1623, during a voyage to Ireland to survey lands with his stepfather Sir Thomas Dutton.
