- Abstract
This paper aims to understand the meaning of life of young students from two educational institutions in Medellin, based on their accounts of their school experience. The design was qualitative, based on the hermeneutic phenomenological method with a narrative perspective and a humanistic-existential approach, in dialogue with the theory of self-determination. The school experience, which surfaces in the life history, is analyzed by means of four categories: School delay: Narratives emerging in the interweaving of life; motivation and school experience; existential values; meaning of life and construction of the life project. Understanding one's own identity is at the core of the meaning of life, while the return to the world of education expands and preserves the need to focus on oneself, based on the values that make sense to young people. The world of education is the possibility for young people to build their life project, oriented to the construction of personal and social identity, mobilized by a set of values that allow them to make decisions in freedom and with responsibility in situations of the here and now; Thus, from their own narrative peculiarity, young people understand the meaning of life in relation to their history in the world of education, thus demonstrating that the school experience is linked to the life history of the human being.
