- Abstract
A psychological and cultural analysis of the Japanese marital and family dynamic is presented. The article focuses on the concept of isshin dotai, translated as one heart, one body, which implies the expectation of nonverbal understanding between the Japanese husband and wife. The author claims that this mindset stems from the Japanese mother's anticipation and immediate meeting of her sons' needs, which in turn becomes the wife's duty as the Japanese man remains psychologically infantile and unable to meet his own practical needs. The concept is applied to social contexts including consumption of alcohol, marital problems and sexual relations.
