- Abstract
Aim of this review is to present practical aspects of vaccination in the context of related allergic reactions. Routine immunization is one of the most effective public interventions which have effectively reduced death and morbidity due to a variety of infectious diseases. But similarly to other medications, vaccines may be responsible for allergic reactions. Although very rarely, allergic reactions to vaccines can be life-threatening. IgE-mediated allergic reactions to vaccines are of special concern, in particular the anaphylaxis following vaccination, which is rare and has to be distinguished from vasovagal reaction. Local reactions are common but are mainly due to non-allergic immune reaction. Some patient groups, those with a previous allergic reaction to a vaccine or its components, are at increased risk of allergic reaction and require special precautions. Accurate diagnosis of vaccine allergy is important, not only to prevent serious reactions but also to avoid unnecessary vaccine restriction. However, allergic reactions may occur in patients without known risk factors and cannot be predicted by currently available diagnostic procedures. Delay of routine immunizations is not recommended and a fear that routine childhood immunization increases risk of allergy development is unsupported by evidence.
