- Authors
Gregory, John
- Abstract
This article focuses on the cycle of panels illustrating articles of the Nicaean Creed, nine of which are extant in the Museo dell' Opera del Duomo in Siena, Italy. The Sacristy of the Duomo of Siena, built and embellished in a single campaign from 1408 to 1413, was one of the major civic projects undertaken during the years following the end of Visconti rule over the city, which encompasses not only the formative years of Sassetta and his contemporaries, but also various important changes in the social and political patterns of Sienese history. The article presents the study designed to draw attention to a number of previously unknown documentary indications of the likely setting, date, and authorship of the "Credo" cycle.
