- Title
IN PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CAREERS OUTSIDE OF ACADEMIA.
- Authors
Kappel, Ellen S.
- Abstract
The article discusses the interest among ocean sciences graduate students in exploring career options outside of academia. It highlights the lack of access to information about these "alternate careers" within academic settings and the efforts being made by professional societies and university departments to bridge this knowledge gap. The article also recommends a special issue of Oceanography that showcases the various ways in which individuals with ocean science degrees can contribute to the well-being of coastal communities and their environments through roles such as facilitators, communicators, and trainers. The author suggests that by promoting these diverse career paths, the term "alternate career" can be replaced with a more positive perspective.
