- Abstract
The choice of couples regarding non-parenthood is part of a historical development, highlighted by a decline in global reproduction rates. Within this context, the research aimed to recognize the reasons and new factors that influence the decision of some couples not to have children. The study was conducted using a qualitative and narrative approach, with a phenomenological hermeneutic methodological design. An open call and non-probabilistic snowball sampling were conducted, resulting in a total of eight participating couples. Data analysis was based on the development of an inductive categorical matrix, followed by the integration of reflective categories. The results revealed four identified categories: motivations arising from personal and present history, including a critical view of the environmental and social context; awareness surrounding parenthood; relationship and couple dynamics; and, finally, the presence of social audience. It is concluded that decision-making regarding not having children is an essential element for shaping the bond, situated within a framework of temporalities that encompasses the past, present, and future of the relationship.
