- Abstract
The stability of 10 parents and their 45 F1 and 45 F2 of wheat were studied for 1000-grain weight, seed hardness, harvest index, protein content and phenol colour reaction at three diverse locations of Uttar Pradesh, India. The stability analysis revealed that the genotype, environment, genotype x environment interaction including environment (linear) were highly significant for all the characters, indicating significant variability among the genotypes and significant involvement of environments with different genotypes. Pooled deviation was also observed highly significant for all the attriblltes, exhibiting considerable genetic diversity in grain yield/plant and quality traits. The parents, namely, K 68 and C 306 for 1000-grain weight K 9107 for seed hardness and grain yield/plant; DL 784-3 and GW 373 for harvest index K 7903 for protein content and K 68, DL 784-3, and GW 373 for phenol colour reaction, were observed as stable over environments. The cross combinations viz., K 68 x K 9107, K 68 x K 7903, K 68 x HP 1633, DL 784-3 x K 9107, DL 784-3 x K 9644, K 9107 K 9644, K 8027 C 306, K 8027 K 9644, C 306 x K 9644 and GW 373 x K 9644 were identified as stable and high yielder in both F1 and F2 generations across environments. Cross, K 68 x K 9107 for 1000-grain weight and for protein content K68 x HP 1633 for 1000-grain weight, was also showed stable performance across the environments in both the generations. These parents and crosses may be utilized in hybridization and further breeding programmes for developiIlg high yielding stable varieties and improving the quality of wheat.
