The article discusses the issues related to empiric windows that are windows of time when clinicians are aware of an infecting organism's species without yet knowing its susceptibilities. The topics discussed include diagnostic techniques for pathogen identification, modification of therapy based on the degree of susceptibility of organism, and role of speciation and susceptibility results in managing antimicrobial therapy.
