- Abstract
The "Oda a León de Nicaragua" is inscribed in a genre of great tradition in Classical culture, the city panegyric, also known as laus urbis, laus civitatis or urbis encomion. This article's goal is to identify, analyze, and interpret this epideictic genre's procedures, of great tradition in Western literature, in Salomón de la Selva's poem, along with the updating and resemantization strategies used by de la Selva in the "Oda". We assume that this manifestation of laus urbis natalis is not only a praise of the city's virtues and fame, but also a panegyric of the poet. Both laudatory acts offer mutual support: the city is a glorious place and gets international recognition thanks to the genious of its most prominent and distinguished sons, among them Salomón de la Selva, while the city virtues and up characterizing its inhabitants (among them, the poet himself).
