- Abstract
This document is a response to concerns raised about a previous publication on assessing and managing the ecological risk of microplastic pollution in the Great Lakes. The authors address the concerns raised, including errors in data rescaling and alignment, and the use of a species sensitivity distribution designed for marine systems in a freshwater system. They acknowledge the errors and provide corrections, and discuss the need for future research to develop more applicable risk assessment frameworks for the Great Lakes. The text also discusses the approach to separating species by "freshwater" and "marine" in risk assessment and suggests that other factors may be more meaningful. The authors address concerns about the lack of uncertainty estimates in the study and acknowledge that quantifying uncertainties would have strengthened the research. They conclude by emphasizing the importance of exploring different management approaches to address plastic pollution in the Great Lakes region, considering the complex jurisdictional landscape and the need for collaboration. The authors express gratitude to the microplastic research community for their contributions and engagement in improving risk assessment in the Great Lakes ecosystem.
