- Abstract
The article presents literary criticism of the books "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift and "The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe and the essay "Of Heroic Virtue" by William Temple. Particular focus is given to depictions of China in the texts. According to the author, these book illustrate the change in European perceptions from an idealized view of Confucianism to a negative attitude towards Chinese culture. Mercantilism and Protestant work ethic are also discussed.
