- Authors
Conlan, Thomas D.
- Abstract
The article examines the civil and military ideals of governance in medieval Japan. Topics discussed include the possession of both ideals by only members of the court, particularly scribes or chamberlains, and the rise of the Kamakura bakufu or warrior government in 1185. Specialized knowledge of military texts and competing concepts of public authority observed during the Ashikaga bakufu era and warrior expertise in civilian and military arts are then mentioned.
