- Abstract
Sam Randazzo, former Chair of the Ohio Public Utilities Commission, has died by apparent suicide at the age of 74. The article discusses Randazzo's involvement in lobbying for the fossil/nuclear industry, while activists were advocating for wind and solar energy in Ohio. It is revealed that Randazzo had engaged in shady dealings, including secretly receiving millions from settlements paid by FirstEnergy, a company negotiating for price breaks with industrial energy users. Randazzo was also indicted for his role in a bribery scandal. The article highlights the failure of the nuclear power industry, with no new large atomic reactors being built in the US and the promise of Small Modular Reactors being far from reality. The author expresses concern about the dangerous and aging nuclear reactors and the potential consequences of prolonging their operations.
