The Rebel Who Came in From the Cold: the Tainted Career of Bayard Rustin.
- Authors
Creegan, Jim
- Abstract
This article explores the political evolution of Bayard Rustin, a civil rights activist who was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. Rustin played a significant role in the civil rights movement, organizing the 1963 march on Washington. However, later in his life, Rustin shifted towards a more conservative stance, supporting the Vietnam War and the nuclear arms race. The article discusses Rustin's opposition to certain radical black movements in the 1960s and his disagreement with Martin Luther King Jr.'s stance on the Vietnam War. It also explores Rustin's involvement with conservative organizations and his support for US foreign policy. The author suggests that Rustin's choices should be critically examined, despite his contributions to the civil rights movement.
