- Title
The Hieroglyphs of Chanukah (or, Celebrating Chanukah as an Anti-Zionist Holiday).
- Authors
Sperber, Elliot
- Abstract
The article discusses the symbolism of three Jewish religious symbols: the pair of stone tablets, the Star of David, and the menorah. The author interprets these symbols as a succession of hieroglyphs that spell out a message. The pair of tablets represents the law, the Star of David represents custom and tradition, and the menorah represents justice. The author argues that the Chanukah menorah, specifically the eight-branched one, symbolizes generative power and opposition to empire, nationalism, imperialism, racism, and capitalism. The article suggests that Chanukah can be celebrated as an anti-Zionist, anti-imperialist, anti-racist, and anti-capitalist holiday.
