- Title
Learning to be an Effective Teacher: Strengthening Observation Skills.
- Authors
Vetter, Rheba E.; Reusser, Janet K.
- Abstract
Effective communication skills enhance a teacher's ability to address the differentiated learning styles of students. However, a teacher must first objectively and actively observe the teacher -- student communication interactions. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the need for developing observation skills and tools within teacher preparation programs. Graduate student practitioners' qualitative anecdotal reports from the systematic observation course, "Improving Instruction through Systematic Observation," demonstrate the benefits of developing observation skills and tools. Utilization of videotapes from one's own teaching or employing peer mentors in order to observe provides feedback to the instructor. Subsequent analysis and discussion using such systematic observation tools such as Cheffers Adaptation of Flanders Interaction Analysis System (CAFIAS) illuminate the strengths and weaknesses of the teacher's communication skills.
